Frequently Asked Questions
What is, and how do I carry out a traceroute?
A traceroute is a way of viewing the path of your connection along the internet with all the relevant stops from your device, through your home network, through our network, out to the internet, and to your intended destination (Netflix, Zoom meeting, website, VPN, server you are trying to access) so that you can see where bottlenecks (delays) might be happening.
Here is the process:
How do I run a traceroute?
– Press the Windows key + R to open the Run window.
– Enter cmd and press Enter to open a Command Prompt.
– Enter tracert, a space, then the IP address or web address for the destination site (for example: tracert www.google.com).
– Press Enter.
Please let us know via email what you get on running ‘tracert’
Can multiple devices be connected to our connection?
Multiple devices connected from your internal home or business network are connected directly to our radio, creating a security risk for your equipment. The devices should be connected to your router so that your devices fall within the security parameters of your router. Without your router, your device type and access information are discoverable by the public on the internet.
How do I make sure that all my devices are connected to my router and that my router is connected to the Etheric connection?
- The cable from the antenna should go into the POE port of the Etheric POE, and the cable from the LAN port of the POE should go into the WAN/Internet port of your router. All other internal cables should connect to the LAN ports of your router. Any mis-cabling here will cause issues
- If you have a Switch, it should be connected after the Router and not directly into the Etheric POE (Connecting a switch directly to the POE is not permitted by the SLA – Service Level Agreement)
- Check if your Router is in Router mode or DHCP/NAT mode (If Apple Extreme router) and not in Bridge mode
Please let us know how it goes, or reach out to us if you need further explanation or assistance.
How come towers suffer from power outages when you say that you have backup power?
Local commercial power can sometimes bring down a specific tower, even when we take into consideration that we have a power backup for every tower.
The reasons are the following:
- Sometimes, unfortunately, our backup power system can fail altogether as backup systems are processes and equipment that need to get going and can fail randomly, just like any other device or process.
- Our backup power can be battery, solar, and fuel generator-based. Back-up is designed to sense the loss of power and then enable the backup system to fire up and then move the power source of the tower to the backup system. When the commercial power grid is restored (usually PGE), then our backup system will back off once, move the power back to the main grid, and power off the backup power system. In some cases, the commercial power will once again fail, and the process will be repeated. If this happens enough times, our backup system can fail.
We are constantly trying to improve our failsafe systems, but we truly appreciate your patience during such service disruptions.
How does a bad signal affect my connection, and how can it be corrected?
A bad signal is a low signal on the radio. Our radios use their own WiFi capability to connect to the tower or, in some cases, to other antennas at neighbor’s properties. A loose dish mount/defective antenna/branch or tree may be blocking the line of sight, or simply a misaligned antenna can all create a low signal that will translate to slow speeds or intermittent disconnections of your service.
In most cases, a dispatch with one of your technicians is required so we can assess the problem and take the necessary steps before the connection fails altogether.
If you see any reference from us as to whether your connection fails from a degrading low signal, please get ahold of us so that we can coordinate the needed dispatch.
How do you run speed tests to check on your connection?
At times, your connection might suffer from slow speeds, and in some cases, speeds can be so slow that your connection appears to have brief disconnections.
It is extremely helpful if you are able to test for speeds so that we can get a specific idea of how slow the speeds are from your side.
Here is the information on how to test your connection for speeds:
If you performed a speed test during the slowdown, please feel free to share the results via email.
If you haven’t tested for speeds, please feel free to search the internet for “Internet Speed Testing.”
It would be ideal if you test during your peak working times, and with all devices offline so that we can have a comparison of speeds during your peak and quiet base times. We can only test speeds from our network to your radio, so your speed tests will help us sort out speeds through your router and its WiFi and through to our connection.
These are some of the more popular and well-known sites for testing speeds. Please visit one and engage the website to do a speed test.

You may also go to our Etheric Support page, and on the left side (a bit lower from the top), you will see a SPEED TEST button.

Please let us know your speed test results and how often they show as slow. Is it a daily problem? A couple of times a week?
Thanks for your help and patience.
