Press Release: Mountain View, CA May 19, 2006. Etheric Delivers 18 Megabit Symmetric Broadband Wireless Internet to Santa Cruz, San Mateo, and Santa Clara Counties.

How Fast Is Fast High-Speed Internet? 72 times faster than DSL or Cable on Upload and 12 times faster than T-1.

Etheric Networks announces the completion of its 3rd generation of Broadband Fixed Wireless Internet Technology: projecting its reach from two Silicon Valley data centers to seven mountaintop communication towers at altitudes up to 4,000 feet above sea level. The line of sight technology looks down upon 80% of the homes and businesses of San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz counties. (The service is also used as far north as Oakland, where the sector is still in beta).

Etheric smashed records on DSL Reports with its 8 megabits symmetric service back in 2003.  What made this so unique was that DSL and Cable were offering uploads of between 128 and 256 Kilobits per second, at the time, and in general that’s still what’s available.

The burning passion of its founder, Alexander Hagen, formerly of DoCoMo Communications Laboratories and Berkeley Networks was to allow bay area businesses and residences to interconnect at Local Area Network Speeds, but over a Wide Area Metropolitan ISP Network.

“In the beginning, it was a blast to see the performance we were able to design and deliver come into being. We had people who had been without broadband suddenly with this incredible firehouse. Our businesses could send and our rural residences could receive, in a way so fundamentally different that it was quite fulfilling to watch unfold.”

“But then came the real challenge, to make it work that way all the time, through storms, denial of service attacks, and in the wee hours of the morning when all of our engineers were just getting home from working on these towers.”

Plagued by the bugs in early broadband fixed wireless technology, the Etheric gang claims to have over-engineered their solution in response, but it has proved to yield some unexpected results. “The vendors we originally bought from were always looking at bringing down the price of the customer equipment by using cheaper components.” CEO Hagen stated.

“We decided to take matters into our own hands, and we have built a box and a network that we predict will survive any cataclysm, hurricane, war, fire, grid failure, Interference, better than any of our competitors. And the benefit of all that work invested in ruggedization and fault tolerance turned out to be unbelievable: high speeds and low latencies, rock-solid stability, and the system cost are still generally between $500 and $1000 in upfront equipment and installation for business and residences.”

“The difference is that what’s sitting on those roofs now is an incredibly powerful wireless networking processor and operating system. High Speeds are just the beginning” Hagen added, “We intend to have the richest and most robust service delivery platform in the business”.
